Cheapest Homes in Alabama

Between the wave of foreclosures and the damage by tornadoes ripping through the state, Alabama's housing market has been harder hit than most states. People searching for cheap homes are going to find many options, some with prices for less than six figures. It still astounds me that people can get into a good home for about the price of a good used car.

Cheapest Homes in Montgomery

HUD offers as 2 bed, 1 bath home on April Street for $7,000. This is a brand new listing as of August 17th, 2011, so you could be one of the first people to take a look at this house. HUD has another home in Montegomery at 16 Kelly Lane. This 3 bed, 1 bath residence is selling for $8,000. The listing and selling brokers are eligible for a $1,250 commission for selling this property, so unlike many cheaper houses, the broker has every incentive to handle your transaction quickly.

Another such house is found at 3686 Norman Bridge in Montegomery. This 3 bed, 1 bath residence is selling for $9,000, but the realtor sees $1,250 commission for making this sell. The same deal applies for a hom eat 2322 Overhill Road in Montegomery. In this case, the place is a 2 bed, 1 bath residence selling for $10,800. You'll also find a 3 bed, 2 bath residence on Pickfair Street selling for $28,000.

Cheapest Homes in Birmingham

Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, beating Montegomery by a few thousand people and Mobile by a few thousand people more. Birmingham's cheapest house for sale is a reduced-price home with 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom going for $4,200. This house is found at 1504 13th Avenue.

Another cheap house in the Birgmingham area is a $16,000 home with 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. The address at this residence, which has an extended listing, is 5809 Avenue P.

Most Expensive Home in Birmingham

When searching for houses in Birmingham, Alabama, I couldn't help but notice that it's not just the affordable homes that are up for sale. I kept coming across a listing for a $17 million home at 7 Montagel Way, with 15 bedrooms and 6 full bathrooms (or a 16 "half-bathrooms"). The property comes with 27 acres of land and the spread looks somewhat like an English manor house of a bygone time. Good luck selling that house in this market.

Affordable Housing in Phenix City

If you hope to move along the eastern border with Georgia, you can find homes in the town of 30,000 called Phenix City. Phenix City is a nice option for those who have to commute into nearby Savannah, Georgia. While I couldn't find any homes that were as cheap as you'll find in the central part of the state, I did find a 3 bed, 2 bath home selling for $77,000 on Sunderlan Drive. The price of this residence has been recently reduced, so the final terms might be negotiable.

Inexpensive Residences in Bessemer

Bessemer is a town of nearly 30,000 people located in the same county as Birmingham (Jefferson County). Bessemer is only 8 miles from Hoover, a city of 77,000 people which is the largest of Birmingham's suburbs. I found a 3 bed, 1 bath house on Selma Road in Bessamer selling for $10,000 on the HUD website.

Cheapest Homes in Tuscaloosa

Given the damage caused by the storms, it's probably no surprise that a lot of homes are for sale in the Tuscaloosa area. Most of these are homes in the $150,000 to $200,000 range or higher, but you'll also find cheaper houses. For instance, Highpoint Drive in Tuscaloosa has a house on sale for $16,000 (no information on rooms). Perhaps a better bargain is a 4 bed, 2 bath house on Shelly Hughes Road selling for just over $27,000.

Cheap Households in Mobile

Mobile is Alabama's biggest seaside city, with a population of around 195,000. Mobile is part of the beautiful Gulf Coast Region, found adjacent to Mobile Bay. People moving to the Deep South tend to think of temperate weather, green hills and greener golf courses, Appalachian mountain scenes, and a lot of swamps, but the Gulf Coast offers the entertainment and pastimes of the deep sea: the Gulf of Mexico. People living in and around Mobile Bay can enjoy a full array of water sports, deep sea fishing, and sunny time at the beach.

You can find cheaper housing in Mobile than in most parts of the country, too. A three bedroom, one bathroom house on Olivia Drive is selling for $38,000 right now.

Cheapest Homes in Huntsville

Huntsville, Alabama is found at the other end of the state near the border with Tennessee. Huntsville is a municipality of 180,000 with access to several other sizable nearby towns. Search and you'll find a number of larger foreclosed homes in the Huntsville region. I found a 3 bed, 2 bath home on Regina Way $47,000, a 4 bed, 3 bath residence on Lewisberg Drive for $51,000, and a 4 bed, 2.5 bath home on Pinedale Drive selling for $52,000. If these are in your price range, check out all three homes and see which is best for your family's needs and living arrangements.

Real Estate in Alabama

If you're going to become a resident of Alabama, you're eventually going to have to make the most important decision of all: whether to be a fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide or the Auburn Tigers. The annual Iron Bowl game not only splits friendships and families, it often decides who plays for the BCS National Title. Alabama and Auburn have split the last two BCS Championships. You know it's serious when a partisan for one team chopping down a tree belonging to the other team becomes national news. You think I'm kidding, but you'll realise I'm serious once you get into your home in Alabama.
